About Me

BIO:  Susan Stewart is a contemporary painter and illustrator whose work bridges decades of commercial design and deeply personal fine art. For 25 years, Stewart worked at the intersection of visual communication, as a print designer and illustrator. After a profound personal loss in 2020, she transitioned fully to fine art, turning to canvas and art paper as a vital space to process emotion and explore the human experience.

Having drawn and painted since childhood, Stewart blends a lifelong mastery of form and colour with the structured eye of a seasoned designer. Her current practice focuses on vibrant mixed-media drawings and paintings that capture complex emotional landscapes with both technical intent and raw intuition. Stewart lives and works in Canterbury, New Zealand.

Art Statement: Art has been my constant companion since childhood, but in 2020 it became my lifeline. After a profound personal loss, I stepped away from a 25-year career in commercial design to dedicate myself fully to the canvas. My work celebrates resilience, connection, and life. Whether I'm capturing the quiet depths of a human face, the untamed energy of nature through bold, vibrant colour, or building tactile layers in my mixed-media drawings, I am seeking to translate complex emotional landscapes into something tangible and beautiful.
